Course Description

  • Transcribe medical reports using correct report format.
  • Transcribe medical reports using correct capitalization, number, punctuation, abbreviation, symbol, and metric measurement rules
  • Identify and define the knowledge, skills, abilities, and responsibilities required of a medical transcriptionist, including medical editing.

Learning Objective

By the end of this course, students should understand the following:

  • Understanding of the functions and proper use of transcription equipment
  • Describe the importance of the confidential nature of medical reports. Be aware of HIPPA guidelines for the medical transcriptionist
  • Describe the content and purpose of the types of inpatient medical reports
  • Describe the content and purpose of the types of outpatient medical reports and correspondence
  • Understanding of abbreviations that should not be used in transcription, hospitals, or medical settings
  • Spell correctly both the English and medical terms and abbreviations presented, either by memory or by using a dictionary or medical book
  • Define the medical terms and abbreviations presented, either by memory or by using a dictionary or reference book
  • Define the prefixes, combining forms, and suffixes presented
  • Recognize the advantages of having current reference material and be able to use it effectively.
  • Use standard proof reader’s marks to edit medical reports without changing either the meaning or the dictator’s style.
  • Recognize the opportunities offered to medical transcriptionists.
